Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Jim Carroll on March 24, 2003:

To this day, I think of Jack almost everyday. I had the privledge of calling him my roommate my first (and only) semester at USMA. From the day I arrived at West Point I felt that I really didnt belong. After a grueling basic training during an awful summer heat, where I could hardly think of anything other than leaving, I was quickly introduced to academic life at the academy. At this time I seriously believed I was going to leave (drop out) before the first day of classes.
It wasn't until I was introduced to Jack that I felt some sort of belonging and comfort. For the next three and a half months Jack pushed me to do what I felt was right for myself. He didn't tell me I should stay, he never told me I should leave. He provided an ear and a perspective that did nothing but try to cheer me up. Although I did end up leaving the Academy without many positive memories, I will forever hold a place in my heart for the individual I only knew for a very brief time yet I feel have know for much longer. Jack has positively changed my outlook on life and has reassured me of its preciousness which must never be taken for granted.
There are very few people who have the ability to attract the eye and ear of all that surround them. Jack had this ability, and to his credit, he was able to emotionally connect with and touch all that had come into his life. I can't say enough about the constant optimistic view Jack carried as I will never forget him and his impact on my life.
