Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Gregory D. Lucas on March 9, 2001:

My father was a profound man of simple, but unshakeable, moral character. He was widely known for his unusual sense of humor, and beloved by his family and friends. Having seen heavy action in WWII, and having suffered traumatic and visible wounds in battle, he had a life-long desire to improve tank gunnery, to cure patently obvious flaws that the armed services overlooked. Early in his career, he invented the Lucas Range Drum, used on all tanks at the time. His later, and more valuable developments, never saw the light of day. Dad retired from the Army, and went into private industry until late in life. He died in 1997 of Alzheimers Disease, leaving behind his wife, Edith, and three grown sons. During his life, he wore the titles of husband, father, Colonel, coach, inventor, salesman, public speaker, community ambassador, patient, and friend. But in his heart, and to his friends, he was always a soldier. No man ever loved God, country, or family so much. No man ever lived with more dignity, or earned more honor. And not a day passes that he is not sorely missed. We love you, Dad. GDL
