Be Thou At Peace
Posted by James Bowen on April 17, 2001:
It was my supreme pleasure to know Hugh over many years as both a colleague at Torrington Co. and friend. He worked with my father for many years at the Torrington Co. in Torrington, CT. so I knew him when I was a child and later when I worked at Torrington Co. myself. To me he was the embodiment of West Point, being the only person that I knew personally who had ever graduated from there at the time. He was always a fine gentleman with a great sense of humor, always ready with a joke. We miss him very much but have the pleasure of seeing his wife Barbara from time to time.
He was instrumental in my son's decision to attend West Point as a cadet in the class of 2002. While in high school, my son Chris had a chance to talk with Hugh at length about his experiences at West Point and what the Academy had meant to him during a New Year's party at my parent's house. It was a few years later that Chris made the decision to apply for West Point to the exclusion of any other Academy, despite cousins having graduated from Annapolis. I think more than anything else, it was the fine example of Hugh that helped Chris make this important decision.
I think Hugh would be proud today knowing that his legacy lives on through first his son Hugh III-'76 and now through my son Chris-'02.
As Always,
Go Army!
