Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Terry Britt on May 29, 2001:

Maurice L. Hazelrigs (Uncle Maurice) was my hero. I was born when he was a cadet at the Point. I have pictures of our first meeting. Since I can remember he has had a huge impact on my life.

My Mother talked about how he excelled in high school as a student and athlete. Being born in the same town he was I still see friends of Uncle Maurice on a regular basis. I have never taked to anyone who said anything despairaging about my Uncle.

My Grandmother to this day talks about how much she misses him and loved him. Until my Grandfathers death last year he talked about him in the same way. My Grandparents lost two of their three children. My Aunt Hilda gave Uncle Maurice a kidney. She died some years later of Lupus. It was only a few years later that Uncle Maurice died of kidney failure.

I became a pilot because of the impact Uncle Maurice had on my life. I was never able to fly with him and I regret that to this day. His children were kind enough to give me one of his scarfs. I understood he wore it while stationed in England. It remains one of my prized possessions.

Uncle Maurice was a true hero. I will always remember him as a strong, brilliant and kind Uncle whom I loved dearly. If West Point help mold my Uncle, you did a great job.

Your favorite nephew.....

Terry
