Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Brig. Gen. Ramon M. Ong (Ret) Philippine Army on June 27, 2001:

I owe Walter a lot for his help during Beast Barracks. When I reported to West Point from the Philippines, I was overweight and in poor physical condition. I also could not adjust to the new diet and the harsh physical demands compounded my difficulties. During the conditioning marches and Plebe Hikes, I could barely keep up with the Company. Many classmates helped me but Walter was always there for that extra push, even to the extent of carrying my rifle when my total load was too great. Maybe without him, I wouldn't have finished those first 2 months of hell. We continued our close friendship even if we went to separate Regiments ofr the rest of our 4 years, because we saw each other all the time during Glee Club practice and other activities. Now, many, many years later, I'm sorry to learn of his death. Skip, I can't thank you enough for what you did for me, but I'll try again - Thanks a lot for helping me become what I am today. I still owe you one!!!
