CEDAR RAPIDS - Col. Duane Lee Emerson, U.S. Army retired, 77, died Saturday,October 6th at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minn., following a lengthy illness.
Duane was born Feb.19,1924, in Cedar Rapids to Ward and Gladys (Wiley) Emerson,graduated from Franklin High School in 1942, from Amherst Prep School in Amherst, Mass. in 1944 and from the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. in 1948,with a degree in military arts and engineering. He received a M.S. in physics in 1954 from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif., and a M.S. in mathematics in 1960 from Renselier Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y.
Duane served in the U.S. Army, being promoted through the ranks to the eventual grade of colonel in 1969. During his career he received the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Joint Services Commendation Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal. He also served as professor of mathematics at the United States Military Academy, 1960 - 1963.
After retiring from the military in 1977, he was professor of mathematics at Luther College, Decorah, 1981- 1992. While there he also served as coach of the women's golf team, 1981 - 1992,
Duane was a golf enthusiast and an active member of the Oneota Golf and Country Club in Decorah.
Duane was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, William.
He is survived by a niece, Pamela (Philip) Gee, Vicksburg, Miss.; and a nephew, Michael (Marilyn) Emerson, Cedar Rapids. Also surviving are three grandnephews, Christopher, Mechanicsville, Va., Scott (Robin) Gee, Suwanee, Ga., and Dale Emerson, Cedar Rapids; three grandnieces ,Catherine (Christopher) Bates. Ridgeland, Miss. Ann (Michael) Bates, Cedar Rapids, and JIll (Devin) Sires, West Des Moines.
Memorials for Duane may be directed to the Emerson Family Schlorship Fund at Luther College , Decorah.
Funeral: 5 p.m. Wednesday, Fjelstul Funeral Home, Decorah, where friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. today. Burial: 10 a.m. Thursday, Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids with full military honors.
