Be Thou At Peace
Posted by C.M. on February 4, 2002:
Anthony was a truly special individual. I think that's pretty obvious from what everyone else has written. It's not just nostalgia, either. Everything written is true. Anthony really was patient, never angry or cross, had the best sense of humor, was dedicated, always positive, and was one of the most caring and compassionate guys I have ever met. If you knew Anthony, he touched your life and made you a better person just by being around him.
Anthony was in my Buckner company and I learned a lot about him then. He was always there as a source of encouragement and inspiration. Anthony was injured over the summer, yet still did everything he could, and more than he should have done, when training with us. When everyone else started to get irritable and pessimistic, Anthony was always there to look for the good in things and to turn a bad situation into a better one. One of my favorite memories of him was when he was my rifle coach for Advanced Marksmanship this summer. I was getting frustrated because I wasn't shooting as well as I usually did. Anthony joked with me and got me to qualify saying, "You have to qualify next time or you'll have to go out on a date with me. We both know you don't wanna have to do that." That became our joke for the rest of the summer.
I first heard of Anthony's death late Friday night when I listened to my voice messages while on pass. It was such a shock because I had seen him a few days earlier. It was so sad to me that such a bright light could go out so fast. Arthur Ashe was once quoted as saying that what we give is what makes our lives. If this is true, then Anthony had a truly great life, though short, because he gave so much of himself to others. Anthony, thank you for touching my life and so many others. You will be missed-we were all so lucky~
