Be Thou At Peace
Posted by Andy Lueckenhoff on February 4, 2002:
It has come as a great shock to me to learn of Anthony Miller's death. I am deeply saddened that the life of such a honorable and kind-hearted young man with a promising future has been cut so tragically short.
I have been lucky enough to have been Anthony's teammate in high school and compete against him in college football. Playing with Anthony at DeMatha was a privilege. He always played with an effort and passion unequaled by anyone else on the team. He wasn't a star player at our high school, but he contributed as much as anyone to the success of the team, playing on offense, defense, and special teams. His play inspired me to play better. And the excellent quality of character and integrity he possessed inspired me as well.
Anthony wasn't a an extremely gifted athlete and certainly I wasn't either. But his hustle and enthusiasm more than made up for it. I think the Army coaches recognized this when they recruited him. As it turns out he became an excellent player for Army.
The Army-Air Force rivalry has always been a special game to me as an Air Force player. But to play against a former high school teammate made the game even more special. We still felt the same friendship we had in high school when we played against each other in college. Although I hated too see Army move the ball on us, I felt proud when Anthony made some amazing receptions as he did in games against us the last two years. After the game when West Point's Alma Mater and the Third Verse is played, the opposing teams usually stay well separated, while teammates stand together and hold each other's hands. I remember Anthony coming up to me and grabbing my hand like he was my teammate. I bet we are the only Air Force and Army players to ever do that.
West Point has lost a great cadet and the military and the United States has lost a great future leader. I wish to my express my deepest sympathy to Mrs. Miller and the entire Miller family. I will keep you all in my prayers. Rest in Peace Anthony.
