Be Thou At Peace

Classmates,

I just became aware of the class e-mail, and, with my first reading, learned of the recent passing of Don Davis.

I became close to Don before 4th class academics even began. To me he was "Davey", and we played right tackle and end next to one another on the C squad line. I had been a back, but was no competition for the glut of high school All Americans available at Beast Barracks try-outs. Davey taught me a lot about blocking from a down position to help me make the switch to end, and make the team. We spent the season playing side by side. We were two young kids from Ohio who came to the Academy straight out of high school, and we immediately found a friendship.

I was so happy to see Davey after so many years when I attended the 20th. I had then remembered an open guy with a smile and kind word for everyone, who brought no ego with him. I now know that I had been privileged to have a humble and loving man for a friend. I loved you too, Davey.

Dick Hynes.
