Be Thou At Peace
Posted by Cynthia Wensinger Andrews on April 11, 2002:
I remember my dad holding me up and telling me he would be back. I remember he smelled like wood and spices. I remember the black government car pulling up and the nice men asking where my grandmother was. I remember my grandfather's black volkswagen beetle driving my older sister and I to the airport in California two days later. I remember being told that 4 was too little to go to a funeral even though I didn't know what one was. I remember my mom always saying my dad was a hero. I remember my mom saying my dad was brave and he died for his country. I remember growing up without him and talking to the sky and my dad in heaven. I remember seeing his grave at West Point and telling him he was in great company there.I remember starting to go gray at 32&mom saying not to worry that my dad was almost completely gray at 32 . I remember wishing my dad could meet his great smart granddaughters and grandson. I remember my youngest asking me about grandpa the pilot and realizing I knew very little about my Dad. I rememberSons and Daughters in touch planning the Vietnam trip for 2003. I remember wanting to go to see where my Dad went when he said he would be back . For that I thank all of the West Pointers and comrades who have helped me and shared with me what they remember about my Dad. I hope to meet many of you at his memorial services in April and May. God Bless All of You Sincerely, Cynthia Wensinger Andrews
