Bartt Derek Owens

West Point, 1994

Be Thou At Peace

Posted by BG R.M. Ong '63 on May 28, 2002:

To me, Bartt was initially an unknown soldier. First, I learn that the U.S Special Forces are coming to train the Philippine Army troops, then there is an accident in the high seas, then the name of CPT Owens is listed as one of the missing casualties and finally the news that there is no hope of finding them alive. Much later I learn that Bartt is a fellow West Pointer. It is always a great tragedy for a young man's life to end when there is so much to live for. I am sure that the future held so much in store for him.

Bartt adds his honored name to the long list of USMA graduates who died on foreign soil. He joins the ranks of those in World War II who gave their lives to uphold freedom in the Philippines.

Thank you, Bartt, for your service in my country. We Filipinos will never forget your ultimate sacrifice. And you will always be a part of us, in our hearts, in our prayers and in our history.

Be thou at peace.
Ramon M. Ong USMA '63
