Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Ramon M. Ong on May 6, 2002:

Jim Humphreys was my Company Executive Officer when I was a plebe. He ran the company often because the Company Commander was always at Sorps Squad Soccer practice. Initially, Cadet Humphreys yelled at me a lot. I could not understand him at all because of his very thick Southern (or Texas?) accent. Of course, I have absolutely no business criticizing his accent since my own accent is peculiar, but that is beside the point - I still simply could not understand him. After a while, he gave up and stopped correcting, disciplining or even talking to me. I did not mind that one bit because there were more than enough upperclassmen to take on those jobs.

His last words to me were spoken right after the Plebe Recognition Parade when he shook my hand and said slowly and distinctly, "You worked hard, Ray."
