I haven't seen Dan since our years at the Academy and yet that experience was more than enough for me to remember him all these years. In spite of his sometimes-awkward appearance and his modest demeanor Dan was one of those people who exemplify what we like think of as the true American character. He had a powerful intellect and yet I never saw him use it to belittle or embarrass others. He was modest about his accomplishments and yet he had an iron will to succeed, often surpassing those of us who may have had a head start in that area. In spite of the time that has passed he was one of the most indelible people in my life's memory.
