Be Thou At Peace
Posted by Susan Hennessey-Filburn on June 6, 2002:
Bill was one of my best friends and I hope he forgives me for this posting which is so long overdue. As he knows I was never a computer person, but I know that wouldn't matter anyway, he would still give me a good "No Excuse Sue". Meeting with some Buffs this past weekend, Bill was a constant conversation piece and he was sorely MISSED, so I figured I would finally post my thoughts!
Bill made West Point for me. He was always there for me and the rest of the Buffs. His friendship and loyalty are the standards I use to measure friendship with today. Whether he was drinking from a boot or making us drink from a boot, he always brought us together. He taught me so much about life, the Army and true friendship. I can still remember plebe year when he was helping me study for military science 101 (I was, yes, actually failing). He made me run squad/platoon drills on the floor of his room. I can never forget that because he took the time/"precious" time to help me pass a class. And I actually pulled it out and passed! The memories Bill gave me and the rest of the Buffs are ones we treasure and still recount to this day. When I think of the times we shared I laugh so hard I cry. We had some great times, didn't we?
As an Army officer, Bill was a leader and warrior in the truest sense of the words. He was strong, and soldiers followed him because of his skill, competence and the fact that they knew he would give it his all and always take "care" of them, as he did his friends.
When Bill pased away, my heart broke. I was lucky enouh to sit with him and say good-bye, but the loss still shook my world. Bill, is still remembered today. However, there is still a hole in my heart, the Buff family, the class of 1991, and the U.S. Army. This world has lost a true leader, a friend, a brother, a son, an officer and a classmate. You will always be with me and the rest of the Buffs!
We miss you!!!
Go Buffs!
