Be Thou At Peace
Posted by Larry D. Smith, '62 on July 4, 2002:
As a Trustee for the Association of Graduates I frequently visit West Point. At many of our social functions the Academy has a group of the leading cadets present. At one such event, approximately a year ago, I met Zach Miller.
Over the period of his First Class year I had occassion to meet Zach several more times at similar functions. As both a Truman and a Rhodes Scholarship winner he was invited to attend. Each time I met with him he remembered me and we have some very interesting conversations. He was bright, articulate, and an athlete as well. To me he personified the West Point Cadet. The last time we talked Zach told me that he was going to go to Ranger School immediately after his graduation from West Point. As a Ranger myself I told him that the training was tought but that he, of all people, would be able to cruise through it.
When I saw the news of Zach's death I was stunned. Both the Army, and West Point, have lost one of their best and a future Army star.
Zach will be missed.
