Be Thou At Peace

Thomas J. McGuire Jr., 81, an artillery officer and veteran of three wars who spent 30 years in the Army before retiring in 1974 as a Brigadier General, died of colon cancer December 5, 2002, at his home in Chantilly, Virginia.

General McGuire served in the field artillery in Europe during World War II and held artillery posts in Korea during the conflict there. He served in Vietnam in 1965 and 1966 and again in 1969 and 1970, where he held artillery and staff posts. His last assignment was on the staff of the Army-Air Force Strike Command at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa.

After retiring from active duty, he held staff posts with the Federal Energy Administration and the Selective Service System before retiring a second time in 1985.

General McGuire, who had maintained a home in Northern Virginia since 1961, was born in Far Rockaway, New York. He was a 1944 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, where he taught mathematics from 1953 to 1956. He was a graduate of the U.S. Army War College and received a master's degree in international affairs from George Washington University.

His military decorations included two Distinguished Service medals, two awards of the Legion of Merit, three Bronze stars and an Air Medal.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Margarete, of Chantilly; three daughters, Diane Sparkman of Arlington, Marguerite Cronin of New York and Maureen McGuire of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; a brother; a sister; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren

On Thursday, December 5, 2002, at his home in Chantilly, Virginia. Beloved husband of Margarete McGuire, his wife of 56 years; loving father of Diane Sparkman of Arlington, Virginia, Marguerite Cronin of New York City, and Maureen McGuire of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida; brother of Patricia McGuire and Phillip McGuire of New York. He is also survived by four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Funeral services with full Military Honors will be held at 8:45 a.m. on Tuesday, December 31, 2002 at Fort Myer Chapel. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
