Frank Freeman Marvin

Be Thou At Peace
Posted by Albert & Margriet Opstal on January 16, 2003:
Frank Freeman Marvin, a great man, a great loss. Frank Marvin, ?a very clever mind and a twinkle in the eye? as Jack Price correctly described him, nearly 80 years old and full of life, my inspiration for growing old gracefully.
Remembering Frank in years back (1967), we met in the Air Force at Andrews AFB, as members of the local scout troop, Frank as Committee Chairman, myself one of the leaders, Franks? son Freeman one of the scouts. Frank exemplified the many ideals of the scout law, in particular, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Cheerful and Reverent. I looked up to Frank; his style of leadership was straightforward, firm, reliable and very pleasant, business with a smile. His son Freeman a fine reflection of his father (and mother I should add).
Over the years I remained in contact with both Frank and Shirleigh, returning to Blacksburg many times, also with my wife and children and always finding real friendship and joy. In 1993 we hiked to the beautiful waterfall in the area, no problem to Frank at 71 years he was always in top shape. Sons Daniel and Thomas loved the adventure of the trail. The following year they visited us while living in Germany (working for the Army Corps of Engineers), flying into Frankfurt aboard an Air Force C5A. They traveled to Norway by train where Frank met up with a Norwegian Air Force officer and former student, in the capital city of Oslo. They made other trips by train, one to Switzerland, great fun to see them return, every time they visited another part of Europe. They joined us in a Middle School awards ceremony at Rhein Main Air Base where our son Daniel was receiving awards. Later at a play in which Thomas performed in the Air Force elementary school. I like to remember these special times together when friends feel more like family.
In March 2003 our son Daniel, now 24 and Air Force officer, is to be married in Birmingham, Alabama. Frank and Shirleigh were planning to be there. Life goes on and we wish for Shirleigh to recover completely and continue our wonderful friendship, but Frank?. we?ll always miss him, this wonderful compassionate friend, father, grandfather and husband.
