Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Jennifer A. Duffy on February 24, 2003:

My father (Thomas E. Duffy, Ltc. retired/deceased) served with Major Tully, teaching ROTC at Ohio State University, before Major Tully was sent to Vietnam. I was 12 years old at the time and he was the first soldier I knew who died in battle. He was 33 years old, with a wife and young baby. I remember him as such a nice man and I remember my father saying he would have gone far in his career. He was so well liked and respected among his fellow officers. I remember hearing what a good guy he was!

I am now 47 years old and I still remember him. His death had such an influence on me as a child. I have been to the Vietnam Memorial twice and have traced his name both times for memory sake. When my father died, he was buried at Arlington and Major Tully's wife came for the burial. I hadn't seen her in 35 years, but I gave her one of my tracings and told her I have never forgotten him and think of him often.
