Be Thou At Peace

Posted by James Chun on April 13, 2003:

The last conversation I had with Jimmy was over the phone, sometime around Thanksgiving. We had spoken about the wedding and how great it was to see everyone. We spoke about how there wasn't many weddings left, and we had to be sure to attend all of them just to see all our friends.

Jimmy was telling me about how he had applied to a few business schools, and he was about to find out which ones he would be accepted to. He joked about how he was going to be the 6th Man for the Blue Devils (with the West Point connection with the coach Mike Krzyzewski). And he mentioned he had an outside chance of getting in to Harvard - Yeah Right!

That immediately got us into a story when we were cows (juniors) at West Point. Jimmy, Chris Dodd and I were in a Financial Accounting class together, taught by MAJ Heller. How we passed that class was a wonder. We had no concept of Economics, Financial Accounting, or much of anything for that matter (or at least I didn't!). Jimmy, Chris and I would always get together for group projects - and ruin the theories and applications we learned in class.

There was one project where we had to, using a skit, discuss "Accounts Payable", "Accounts Receivable", and all the other financial accounting terms from the previous lessons. The three of us, not having a clue about the class, performed a skit going to McDonald's as our way of teaching the class about "Accounts Payable", "Accounts Receivable", etc. We had NO CLUE of the larger scale of those terms - we had to narrow it down to ordering Big Mac's and Fries and paying with cash to understand what those terms meant!

Jimmy and I laughed for a good 10 minutes about that story. Jimmy said that when he was going to teach Economics at West Point in the future (a definite irony with the story just told), that I was going to visit and sit in one of his classes. I'm sure Jimmy would have definitely told that story to his cadets.

God Bless You Jimmy!!!
My heart and prayers go to his family.
