Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Dick Roberts on June 5, 2003:

Dear George,

It's been 40 years today since we ran hurriedly from the gate at West Point and off to the Army. We had a fantastic time at Infantry Officer Course, Jump School and even Ranger School where, even then, you never stopped laughing and you loved to volunteer to "muck out" with that M-60 Machine Gun on patrol. What a guy! You kept on smiling and laughing at Fort Campbell as a platoon leader in 1/327th (Abn)Inf (AKA "ABOVE THE REST") in early 1964, and continued later as we deployed to Viet Nam in 1965. In Viet Nam your faithfulness to your soldiers and brother officers ran so unbelievably deep George. Your child-like decency shone through that dank corruption with a promise of something better somewhere, sometime as you, we all, strove to get there. I know how much you wanted to make it back home, and how close you were my friend. But in you own way you got there George and without a doubt still smiling. We loved you George and were honored to have known and served with you. You bring a smile to our hearts after all these years as you were and always will be "Above The Rest". Your USMA Classmates and 1/327th Brothers
