Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Mark Nelson on June 19, 2003:

Monty was a guy I knew only a little, but he made a big impact. He was the first upperclassman I ran into at USMA when I was a plebe who understood the plight of plebes and made an effort to demonstrate benign leadership. I met him in the USMA hospital in October 1972. I don't know why he was there, but I had strep throat and viral pneumonia. I was kind of shell-shocked from the early months of being an F-1 plebe. To say I was wary of any upperclassman would be an understatement. But Monty was friendly to me, without losing his place as an upperclassman. It meant a lot to me. After leaving the hospital I recall sporadically seeing Monty around campus, and he always had a kind word to say along the lines of "Good to see you're still with us!" When I heard he had passed, my only thoughts were, "Only the good die young." We'll see you on the high ground, Monty.
