Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Ray Bosse on June 20, 2003:

As a teammate of Scott's on the swim team, and being two years behind him, I got to know Scott quite well. He was the perfect example of the overachieving cadet. A young man who came to West Point an average high school swimmer and eventually competed in the AAU Swimming National Championships his senior year while setting the Academy Record in the 200 breaststroke.

"MoonDog", as he was called by all who loved him, was an example of a kind leader. He could be hard nosed when it came to doing the right thing, could demand it from others , while maintaining their self-respect.

A picture of Scott being congratulated by his teammates after winning the 200 breastsroke against Navy his senior year (which Army won) hangs in the foyer of Crandall Pool. The story behind the picture, like many that hang at West Point, is something that all cadets on the team should know.

Few knew that the Scott spent the summer vacation between his Cow and Firstie year driving his motorcyle across the USA.

I had the privledge to speak at the dedication of the new electronic timing system at his high school pool in Norwich, NY. His high school class had raised the money to purchase and install it in his honor. They dedicated it on the occasion of one of their reunions, and it became even more obvious to me listening to their comments what a special guy Scott was.

"Moondog" you are not forgotten; save a spot in your lane for us!
