Be Thou At Peace

Posted by David Olmsted on June 26, 2003:

From a Classmate ...

I wasn't a very good classmate and an even worse roommate. Back then I was arrogant and aloof and hard to like. But "Bird" made the effort to be my friend as well as my classmate. He was everyone's friend.

All these years since our days at the Academy have been wonderfully sweet and fulfilling to me, yet I feel a sense of regret that Don didn't get to experience similar joys of life which I have. No individual comes to my mind more profoundly than "Bird" Colglazier when I hear CPT Miller's final words from the movie "Saving Private Ryan" as he says to Ryan "Earn it." I'm grateful to Don for making his sacrifice for our freedom. Nothing would please me more than to someday hear him say "You earned it."

As our 35th Reunion approaches, I am sure Don will be fondly and frequently remembered.
