Be Thou At Peace

Posted by David Eastman on June 28, 2003:

Zac was an upperclassman in G-3 when I became a Gopher as a yearling. He was miles above me in academics, but still stopped to help me when I needed it. I will forever remember him taking the time to go back and figure out how to solve the math problems that had me confused, even though he had already gotten rid of his textbook long before. There was no reason for it other than I was an underclassman in the company that was looking for help.

At our company dining-in last fall we remembered Zac and Jack (a Plebe in my squad who died in 2001). We questioned whether or not it was a curse that so many cadets in the company had died, contracted cancer, been in car accidents, or had similar close calls. It did seem a bit out of the ordinary that our company had experienced so much in such a short time. But the blessing was in that we had experienced and had the privilege of spending time with both Zac and Jack. As cadets, they proudly represented G-3 and the United States Military Academy. At the dining-in it was said that our class (2003) would be the last to have known both of them as companymates. And though future Gophers cannot have the privilege of meeting them, they can still hear from others the memory of their having been with us.

See ya Zac
