Be Thou At Peace
Posted by John Horning on July 8, 2003:
Even though we were classmates I didn't meet Dan until AOBC. No matter how small your class is there is always someone you meet later in life and discover is a classmate that you didn't know. Dan and I were assigned to the same small group in AOBC, which basically means we were on the same tank throughout our training. That's a great way to get to know a guy. Of course we spent alot of time together on that tank, but we also hung out over at my place at Craig Apartments. We drank a lot of beer and played a fair amount of Sega. During our final FTX we were getting the tanks ready to turn in when we somehow found the Army-Navy football game on some crossed frequency on an old AN/PRC-77 in the tank. I remember Dan and I trying to hear as much of the game as we could while counting BII. That was the first game in the last 4 years we weren't physically at, but it was still great getting to listen with your classmate. After AOBC I went to Germany and Dan went to Ft Riley. I didn't see him again until the summer of 99 at Fort Hood. My brigade had just returned from Bosnia and we were getting ready for NTC and I would cross paths with him over at his Bde HQ while they were doing the NTC prep for a rotation ahead of us. I don't think he knew then that he was sick, at least I didn't know yet. At the time I think we had small chit chat because we were always on the way to somewhere else. You know how it is when you're sure you'll get more time later to sit down and really catch up. Shortly after that I got out and then I heard Dan was sick. I never got that chance to sit down and really catch up with him. At least the memories I have of him are all about good times and having fun.
We'll miss you Monkey - be thou at peace.
