Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Dick Breakiron on July 16, 2003:

I first met Willie at the Prep School at Stewart Field. He already had the CIB from his service in Germany in WWII and Hack hung the nickname 'Willie' on him from the Willie and Joe cartoons popular at that time. Willie hung the nickname 'Beadeye' on me because of my tendency of checking to be sure the pot was right in the poker games we played in the barracks. We both were in the same beast company and then assigned to A-1. I was lucky enough to room with Willie during all four of our cadet years and he kept us in good spirits with his great sense of humor and in later cadet years, with his writings in the Pointer magazine, one of which dealing with Christmas in our firstie year got him in hotwater with the Com. He branched Armor and we only saw each other once after graduation when he was at a conference in DC and we had dinner together with his Daphne and my Joyce. The next time I saw him was at our 50th and we relived some moments again. He will be missed.
