Be Thou At Peace
Posted by Barry Harriss on July 16, 2003:
News of the passing of our revered icon of laughter, gallant cynicism and independent thought has brought a real feeling of sadness to this humble and erstwhile soldier. From my earliest memories of Stewart Field, the names of Willie, Hack, Beadeye, Hank Otten, Del and others brought a feeling of belonging to something bigger than myself. It was there I finally realized, as a teenager, that the world was a bigger place than I had previously known. To paraphrase another icon, Bob Hope, "Thanks for the memories". Yes, the memories keep flooding back - how Willie, Hack and a few others introduced me to eating pizza. To a southern teenager, "tomato pie" didn't sound too good, but one night on a trip down to WP from Stewart they wanted to stop and have one. There was the time that I really brought Willie to tearful laughter with a joke I don't even remember, and I was so proud. Willie, I really miss you. Take care, old soldier. It was Willie who taught me how to fieldstrip and really clean an M-1. It was Hack who showed me that it really wasn't the most important thing in the world to do it right now.
