Donn Ferus Chandler

Born June 9, 1928 - Died July 8, 1958

Donn Ferus "Chet" Chandler was born in Eau Claire, Wisconsin on 9 June 1928 and was appointed to West Point from the 9th Congressional District.

His West Point classmates fond memories of Chet are: "Starting his service career as a Marine, Chet efficiently adapted himself to West Point's curriculum. A hive from way back he succeeded over the Tactical Department while his astute mind conquered the academic side and his sharp eye denoted an expert marksman. His reputation with the fairer sex is as notorious as his sharp wit and his bottomless stomach; truly an unbeatable combination."

During his cadet days Chet was on the Pistol Club and on the Camera Club all four years and served as Secretary of the former. He was on the Skeet Club plebe year, on the Rifle Team yearling and cow years and on the Radio Club cow and first class years. Chet was a Cadet Sergeant his first class year.

On graduation Chet went in the Air Force and after pilot training reported to Biggs AFB, Texas where he served from 1953 to 1955. His next assignment was to the 1st Training Squadron in Germany and was awarded the Air Medal for meritorious achievement beyond that normally expected, while participating in aerial flight.

Chet died in an aircraft accident on 8 July 1958 near Spangdahlem AFB Germany. He was a Captain at the time of this death.
