Be Thou At Peace

Posted by CPT Aaron Lilley '94 on August 6, 2003:

1LT Leif Nott, a 2000 USMA graduate from Company A-3, was killed late
Wednesday night (30 July) in a firefight in Iraq north of Baghdad. Leif died serving as XO of A Troop 1-10 Cavalry. Leif was an exceptionally bright and dedicated young man. I was his first commander. Under my command of B Troop 1-10 Cavalry he served as the 3rd platoon (scout platoon) leader, fresh out of AOBC. While one of my soldiers he married a beautiful young lady named Melanie from Kentucky. He also leaves behind his parents in Cheyenne, Wyoming. 2 other Buffalo Soldiers were also injured in the engagement.

I will never forget the one day butterbar Nott came to me and asked why I was so much harder on my lieutenants than the other troop commanders. I told Leif that my job was not to develop garrison platoon leaders but to mold and train platoon leaders who could lead, fight, and win in combat. He then asked me why I was harder on him than the other lieutenants and was surprised when I told him he had the most potential of my 4 platoon leaders and that I pushed him daily because far in the future he was going to be a fantastic battalion commander.

Any help and prayers for him and his loved ones would be much appreciated. 'Be thou at peace.' God save our souls.

Captain Aaron Lilley
