Alan Arthur Lichtenberg

Born 6-1-1929 - Died September 14, 2003

Alan Arthur "Lich" Lichtenberg was born in Brooklyn, New York on 1 June 1929 and was appointed to West Point by Congressman Donald O'Toole from the 13th Congressional District.

His West Point classmates affectionately recall: "Doubtful as to whether his brain consists of a slide rule and various other log tables, or the conventional fleshy matter, we believe he is a direct descendent of Solomon. Rosy cheeked, wavy haired, and pleasantly plump, he has proved to be a master of slow motion. A friendly gesture, a frequent smile, and an all-around pleasing disposition will aid "Lich" to a promising future."

During his cadet days Lich went out for Football his plebe and yearling years, for Boxing plebe, yearling, and cow years, was with the French Club yearling, cow, and first class years, on the Radio Club and the Forum during cow and first class years and was a Cadet Sergeant his first class year.

On graduation Lich went in the Corps of Engineers and after completing the Basic Engineers Course at Fort Belvoir, Virginia reported to the 10th Engineer Combat Battalion 3rd Division in Korea from 1952 to 1953. On completion of this assignment Lich was decorated with the Silver Star for distinguished gallantry in action. Lich also served at Eglin AFB and at Marion, Ohio. He was next assigned to United States Engineer District in Buford, Georgia where he served from 1953 until 1955 when he resigned his First Lieutenant's commission.

He has served as President of S Lichtenberg & Company since 1955. He was instrumental in building the Jewish Chapel and the Lichtenberg Tennis Center at West Point.

Lich made his home in Long Island, New York. The November 1997 Assembly noted that Al retired from the curtain business in New York. Son Ric manages their factories in Georgia. He was happy to report the birth in January of his 15th grandchild, Evan Jacob Miranow.

Alan died on September 14, 2003.

POSTSCRIPT (August 2004)- c/o - Chuck Satuloff - "Herb Lichtenberg, '54, Al's brother, tells me that as a memorial tribute to Al and Elaine, Alan's four children contributed to the USMA sufficient funds to refurbish the interior of the Old Cadet Chapel, the place of their parents' wedding. Herb was the mentor to Al's children in this endeavor."
