RE: Alan Lichtenberg?s Funeral
At about 3PM on September 15, 2003, under the care of a military Honor Guard from the United States Military Academy, Alan Lichtenberg was laid to rest at his family?s burial place at the New Montifiore Cemetery, Pinelawn, L.I., NY.
Several hundred people attended a morning funeral service that was conducted by Rabbi Robert Widom at a chapel in Great Neck NY. The invocation was presented by Col. Scott McChrystal, Chaplain, USMA. who stated that Lt. Gen. William Lennox, Superintendent, USMA, would have attended were it possible. Alan?s four children, Richard, Susan, Barbara and DeeDee, their spouses and Alan?s fifteen grandchildren were in attendance along with his brother Herb, Cl?55 and his family. Present from ?51 were Florence and Cappy Bernstein, Elaine and Chuck Satuloff and Frances and Barney Zwerling. Lt. Col. Scott Browne, USMA Director, Academy Advancement and Michael Hogan, Director, Major Giving, AOG, were in attendance as representatives of USMA.
In their eulogies Alan?s three daughters spoke of his love, care and concern for his family. Satuloff was asked to speak his words and the words of a number of ?51 classmates - Matney, Daigh, Mintz, Chacon, Foss and Bernstein - each of whom wrote about Alan.
A funeral procession proceeded to the cemetery where the American flag draping the coffin was elevated as a three-gun salute was rendered. Taps was played and a meticulously folded flag was presented to Alan?s oldest child, Richard and then handed to his uncle, Herb.
As he joins the Long Gray Line, Alan leaves behind a legacy of good deeds including the funding with Herb of West Point?s Lichtenberg Tennis Center and the West Point Jewish Chapel.
