Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Kevin Carter on September 23, 2003:

Nick was a great friend and a truly outstanding individual. At Camp Buckner, WP, he was a great squad leader for me and then a great assistant squad leader for me. He was tough and every thing you ever wanted in a true leader. His challenges in life were matched by few, and even fewer met them in such great success as he did.

I'll never forget our weekend in El Paso in June 1959 when he asked me, a flanker from M2, to date his cousin in Las Cruces, NM, for he didn't quite trust his short, "runt" roomates, company mates, etc. with his cousin. I wasn't sure if it was a compliment or an insult. But we all did have a good time, in Las Cruces.

During his captivity, I prayed for him, called his parents, and was not surprised by his escape. You just couldn't keep him down.

Nick, you gave everything your country could ever ask. You are my hero. Pray for us all now!

Kevin Carter
