John Wesley Jones Jr., 77, of 320 Earlwood Road, Statesville, died Thursday, Nov. 6, 2003, at The Gardens, following a period of declining health.
He was born Feb. 14, 1926, in Statesville and was the son of the late John Wesley Jones Sr. and Gladys Sherrill Jones.
He was a graduate of Statesville City Schools, attended The Citadel, and was a 1948 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
On June 17, 1948, he was married to Ruth Scott Jones, who died June 16, 2000.
He served with the U.S. Army for six years as a captain and was stationed in the United States and Japan.
Mr. Jones was affiliated with the Statesville Flour Mills from 1954 until 1977 serving as secretary-treasurer and general manager. From 1977 until his retirement he served as Trial Court Administrator in the North Carolina 22nd Judicial District.
Active in civic, church and politics, Mr. Jones was a former member of the Statesville Jaycees, where he was honored as "Young Man of the Year" and was also awarded the Distinguished Service Award. He was a member of the Statesville Rotary Club, served as president, and was named a Paul Harris Fellow.
He served on the Mitchell College Board of Directors; Statesville Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors; Iredell-Statesville United Way, head of the Industrial Division; served on the board of directors of First Union National Bank and had served as president of the North Carolina Feed Manufacturers Association.
He was a member of the Iredell County Democratic Party and served as county campaign manager for Skipper Bowles' campaign for governor in 1972.
Mr. Jones was a member of First Presbyterian Church, served as a Sunday school teacher, deacon and an elder.
In addition to his wife and parents, a daughter, Ruth Sherrill Jones, died in 1954; and a brother, Avery Sherrill Jones, died in 1987.
He is survived by three sons and two daughters, J. Wesley Jones III of Raleigh; Gordon Scott Jones of Charlotte; David Landrum Jones of Raleigh; Janet Jones Andrews of Richmond, Va.; and Katherine Jones Carpenter of Statesville. Six grandchildren, Daniel Jones, Richard Andrews, Wesley Andrews, Katherine Andrews, Elizabeth Carpenter and Anne Carpenter, also survive.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003, at Oakwood Cemetery with the Rev. Stephen Scott officiating. The family will greet friends at the residence, 320 Earlwood Road, on Friday from 4 until 6 p.m.
