Matthews McCleave Collins
Born 19 February 1928 - Died 15 October 1986
Matthews McCleave "Matt" Collins was born in Louisville, Kentucky on February 19, 1928 and was appointed to West Point on a Senatorial appointment.
His West Point classmates recall: "Greeting us with his Kentucky humor in '47, Matt soon had us all taking note. With a heart as big as his home state, and a smile to boot, Matt became a true friend. Not quite the prize of the Academic Department, yet when it came to doing a good job, he leaves little to be wanted in an officer. Matt departs with a smiling face and determined heart that spells success for the Southern Gentleman."
During his cadet days Matt was on the Ski Club all four years, on the Howitzer staff for two, on the Dialectic Society and the Model Railroad Club yearling year and was a Color Sergeant his first class year.
On graduation Matt went in the Air Force and after pilot training reported to the 16th Flight Squadron in Korea where he served through 1953 and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for distinguished heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight, 2 Air Medals for meritorious achievement beyond that normally expected, while participating in aerial flight, and the Purple Heart for wounds in action against an enemy. In 1958 Matt earned a Master of Science degree in Industrial Management from the University of Wyoming, he was then assigned to the United States Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colorado and served until 1961. This was Matt's last military assignment. He resigned his commission as a Captain in 1961 and was engaged in the Real Estate Industry in Tucson, Arizona until his death on 15 October, 1986.
