Charles Arthur "Chuck" Crowe was born in Gurdon, Arkansas on 12 December 1927 and was appointed to West Point from the 7th Congressional District.
His West Point Co C-2 classmates recall: "'The Deacon,' as the majority of former Army men, soon took West Point in his stride. For five years he took the whole of what the Academy had to offer, taking with him a reputation supremely famous and a character greatly admired. His leaving is as unreal as losing a cherished tradition. Chuck will forever be remembered as the social lion of the company and the toast of the Corps." During his cadet days Chuck went out for Soccer plebe year; was with the Skeet Club yearling, cow and first class years; with the Weight Lifting Club yearling and cow years; and was a Cadet Sergeant his first class year.
Upon graduation Chuck went in the Artillery and after completing the Basic Artillery Course at Fort Sill, Oklahoma reported to the Division Commanding General as Aide-de-Camp where he served from 1952 to 1954. In 1959 Chuck earned an Masters of Arts degree from the University of Florida and was then assigned to the Staff & Faculty of the Army Infantry School where he served until 1961. In 1965 Chuck attended the Armed Forces Staff College, Norfolk, Virginia and on completion was assigned to the Army Mission in Argentina where he served from 1966 to 1968 and was awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal. Chuck's next duty assignment was as Battalion Commander 8th Artillery, 25th Division, Republic of Vietnam where he served from 1969 to 1970 and was decorated with the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services; and three Bronze Star Medals for distinguished heroism against an enemy. He was also awarded three Air Medals for meritorious achievement beyond that normally expected, while participating in aerial flight. From 1970 to 1971 Chuck was assigned to the Office Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs and was then selected to attend the Army War College, Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania and on completion was invited to stay on the Staff & Faculty where he remained until 1974. Chuck's next assignment was as Commanding Officer of the Military Group to Honduras where he served until 1976 and was awarded a second Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services. Chuck's last military assignment was to Headquarters, First Army where he served from 1976 to 1978 when he retired from the United States Army as a Colonel.
On retirement, Chuck accepted a position with the Nuclear Emergency Preparedness Agency where he served from 1978 to 1988 when he retired for the second time. The November 1997 Assembly had noted "Charles Crowe is recovering from colon cancer surgery this past spring. He is concentrating on a physical rehabilitation program. Daughter Allison was married in August." Chuck and his wife Joan made their home in Carlisle, Pennsylvania where Chuck died of colon cancer on May 19th 1999.
