George Charles Filchak
Born July 20, 1927 - Died September 28, 1992
George Charles Filchak was born in South Bend, Indiana on 20 July 1927 and was appointed to West Point from the Army of the United States.
His West Point classmates recall: "George came to be an ardent cadet through the Army, via the United States Military Academy Preparatory School at Stewart Field. He managed to detour by Okinawa for some six weeks, and he will assure that will not be the first of his station preferences. George's keynote at West Point (during the time he was not dragging) has been hard work. The Army should provide big things for him."
During his cadet days George was on the Ring Committee all four years; went out for Basketball plebe, yearling and cow years, and earned Numerals; was on the Policy Committee cow and first class year, and was a Cadet First Sergeant his first class year of Company H-2.
Upon graduation George went in the Artillery and after completing the Basic Artillery Course at Fort Sill, Oklahoma reported to the 17th Field Artillery Group where he served until 1952 when he received orders to United States Forces Austria with the 510th Field Artillery Battalion. Next George was assigned to Headquarters, 749th Anti Aircraft Artillery Battalion where he served until 1953 when he was Honorably Discharged from the United States Army as a First Lieutenant.
Returning to civilian life George went into sales and became a Sales Engineer with Robinson Technical Products. George died in Emerson, New Jersey on 28 September 1992 where Mrs. George C. Filchak (Joan) makes her home.
