Benedict Joseph Smith

West Point, 1999

Be Thou At Peace

Posted by 2002 class Mother on November 13, 2003:

He provided a faceless, nameless service to a country that doesn't know how much they needed him.

He sacrificed his life, attempting to save the lives and property of people he didn't know, and did so without regret.

He faced the tyrant in the sands of Iraq, so that we did not have to face them in our American Cities. He was a soldier. He was a hero. Thank God he was there to protect my freedom.

I will remember him in my prayers and pray for strength for his family. His name is written on a long-burning candle in my home. The flicker of the candle will remind me frequently through the day to pray for him and those he loved.

At the end of the day, I add one more prayer, before I put the candle out for the night. I pray for all of our soldiers, who are there, and who are going. God, give them strength. God, give them courage. God, keep them safe.

God, hold close the soul of our soldier, Ben Smith.
