Joseph Vincent "Joe" Fleming was born in Staten Island, New York on 18 February 1928 and was appointed to West Point from the Army of the United States. His West Point classmates observed: "Having spent 15 months in Germany, Joe acquired a desire to learn the German language. His number one standing in German attests to how well he succeeded. A desire to complete every job he begins and his attention to details make him an excellent Armored prospect. His red face radiates cheer, but his many hours spent in reading have given him a philosophical air found in few men." During his cadet days Joe found time to serve on the General Committee two years, with the Radio Club for four, with the German Club for three, on the Howitzer Staff and as an Acolyte one year. Joe was a Cadet Captain and commanded Company L-2 his first class year. On graduation Joe did indeed go in the Armored Corps and after completing the Basic Armored Course reported to the 13th Tank Company and served with it through 1952. Joe was assigned to the 6th Infantry in Berlin in 1952. In 1957 Joe resigned his commission as an Army Captain to return to school. He obtained an LLB degree from Columbia University in 1960 and has been in the practice of law in his hometown of Staten Island since. The November 1997 Assembly noted "Joe's wife, Betty Jean, died in August 1996. Joe plans to sell his home in Staten Island but stay in the area to be near daughters Kristin and Ellen who work in NYC. Daughter Susan is a nurse practitioner in Durham, NC. Joe, retired from his admiralty law practice, reads, takes part in church activities, and cares for Ferguson, his Labrador.? Joe died on January 12, 2000 of pneumonia. He was cremated and was buried at West Point in May, 2000.
