Thomas Hubert Hastings

Born May 26, 1927 - Died March 29, 2001

Thomas Hubert "Hubie" Hastings hails from Lorain, Ohio where he was born on 26 May 1927. He was appointed to West Point from the Ohio 14th Congressional District.

At West Point his classmates made the following observations: "Never a man to let academics interfere with an education, Hubie distinguished himself in other fields. As the recognized leader of the Bolshevik faction in D-1, our hero won many battles with the Academic Department and lost several with the Tactical Department. His easygoing manner and pleasant personality will insure his success in the future. P.S. His ideals are Prince Valiant and William the Conqueror."

During Cadet days Tom went out for Boxing all four years and earned a Minor "A" and numerals in the sport. He was on the Pistol, Ski, Camera, and French Clubs. He played Goat Football his Cow year and was a Cadet Sergeant his first class year.

On graduation Tom went in the Infantry and after completing the Basic Infantry Course at Fort Benning, Georgia served at Fort Jackson for most of 1951 and 1952. He then got orders to the 27th Infantry Regiment, 25 Division in Korea where he served from 1952 to 1953. His next assignment was to Headquarters, 24th Division where he served from 1960 to 1962. In 1962 Tom was appointed Assistant Professor of Military Science at Dickinson College. Next Tom was selected to attend the Defense Language Institute at Monterey, California where he studied Vietnamese. He was then assigned to Headquarters, Military Assistance Command, Vietnam where he served from 1968 to 1970.

On return to stateside Tom was assigned to Headquarters, Strategic Communications Command where he served, his last military assignment until 1972 when he retired as at Lieutenant Colonel.

On retirement Tom went back to school and earned a Masters degree in Environmental Studies from the University of Texas.

The May 1991 Assembly noted that the Hastings continued to travel fast and often; to London in January and March; to Amsterdam in May for the Van Gogh Centennial; and to Spain in October. Gail and Tom were a great help to Rocky and Joyce Milburn during her hospitalization in San Antonio. Tom and his wife Gail made their home in San Antonio, Texas. Tom passed on early the morning of March 29, 2001.
