Born May 29, 1929 - Died August 27, 2002
John Hinton, Jr. was born in Hawaii on 29 May 1929 and was appointed to West Point from the 12th Congressional District of Missouri. His West Point classmates recall: "One of the class's philosophers, John has striven to keep the rest of the fold from the dens of inequity. Perhaps the traditions of Missouri; his background as an Army Brat; or his pursuit of the intangible, prompt him to be ever present when the subject is controversial. His success here was complete, and he leaves without regret, but with fond memories." During his cadet days John went out for Soccer plebe year; was with the Chapel Choir plebe, yearling, and cow years; with the Glee Club cow and first class years; with the French Club serving as Treasurer yearling and cow years; and was a Cadet Sergeant his first class year. Upon graduation John went in the Infantry and after completing the Basic Infantry Course at Fort Benning, Georgia reported to the 1st Infantry Regiment in 1952 and then to the 27th Infantry Regiment in Korea where he served from 1952 to 1953. On return to stateside John joined the 504th Airborne Infantry Regiment and served with it from 1953 to 1955. In 1956 John was assigned to the English Department at the United States Military Academy and served as an Instructor until 1959. In 1960 John went to The Infantry School, Fort Benning, Georgia and then rejoined his old 27th Infantry Regiment, this time in Hawaii and then in Thailand where he served until 1963. Next John attended the Air Command and Staff College at Maxwell AFB, Alabama in 1964 and on completion was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division and served with it until 1965. From 1965 to 1966 John served as Advisor to the Republic of Vietnam. Then in 1967 John attended the Armed Forces Staff College, Norfolk, Virginia and on completion was assigned to Office of Personnel Operations, Department of the Army and served until 1971 when he retired from the United States Army as a Colonel. John made his home in St. Inigoes, Maryland. The September 1991 Assembly noted, "John living a comfortable retirement on the MD shore is a grandfather 5 times. Son Jack, a master jumper with the XVIII Airborne Corps, was in Iraq. Cullum No. 6110 John Hinton Class of November 1918 was John's father. John died on August 27, 2002.
