Born January 22, 1928 - Died October 27, 1952
Maynard Benjamin "Mike" Johnson was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on 22 January 1928 but was appointed to West Point from Michigan on a Senatorial appointment.
His West Point classmates recall: "Mike believes in spending as little time as possible within these grey walls. His reputation is well-founded by his weekend sojourns to the outside social circuit as a member of the various activities of the Point. The class couldn't ask for a better representative than this product of Calif-Wisconsin whose winning personality and keen sense of humor can't help but win friends for him."
During his cadet days Mike did indeed partake of the Point's activities; he went out for Chapel Choir all four years; was with the Model Railroad and Radio Clubs plebe, yearling, and cow years; on the Debate Council and with the Chess Clubs plebe and yearling years; went out for Track plebe year; was with the Dialectic Society and the Howitzer Staff yearling, cow, and first class years; on the Glee Club and was Ticket Representative cow and first class years, was with the Spanish Club cow year; and was a Cadet Sergeant his first class year.
Upon graduation Mike went in the Infantry and after completing the Basic Infantry Course at Fort Benning, Georgia reported to the 19th Regiment, 24th Division in Japan during 1952. Next Mike received orders to the 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Division in Korea where he was killed in action on 27 October 1952. Mike was a First Lieutenant at the time of his death. He was decorated with the Purple Heart for wounds in action against an enemy at the time of his death.
Mike was also an Infantryman. For the Infantryman's Creed click: Creed
