Born March 11, 1928 - Died August 8, 2000
James Richard "Jim" Kintz was born in Ohio on 11 March 1928 and was appointed to West Point from the 1st Congressional District of Alabama.
His West Point classmates recall: "In his five years at West Point, Jim earned plenty of 'Stars,' but they all went on his 'B-robe;' not his dress coat. But twirling Sedgwick's spurs and a lot of hard work have brought him safely to graduation. His earnestness, hard work, and sportsmanship together with his previous Army experience combine well to serve him in his career, where he is as appreciated as he is here by his friends."
During his cadet days Jim went out for Fencing all four years and earned a Minor 'A' in the sport; was with the Spanish Club yearling and cow years; and was a Cadet Sergeant his first class year.
Upon graduation Jim went in the Infantry and after completing the Basic Infantry Course at Fort Benning, Georgia reported to the 7th Armored Division where he served from 1951 to 1952. Next Jim went to Korea with the 224th Infantry Regiment of the 40th Division and served until 1953 and was decorated with the Silver Star for distinguished gallantry in action; the Bronze Star Medal for distinguished heroism against an enemy; and the Combat Infantryman Badge. From 1953 to 1954 Jim was assigned to Headquarters, 3rd Armored Division and then returned to Korea and served until 1956. In 1958 Jim earned a Master of Arts degree in English from the University of Pennsylvania and his next assignment was to teach English at the United States Military Academy from 1958 to 1961. From 1962 to 1965 Jim served in Hawaii and then returned to the United States Military Academy, Office of the Dean where he served from 1966 until 1968 and was awarded the Commendation Medal for distinguished service. In 1973 Jim went on his last military assignment, this time to Joint Military Assistance Group Thailand; served until 1975 when he retired from the United States Army as a Lieutenant Colonel. Jim made his home in Kaneohe, Hawaii. He died on August 8, 2000.
