Robert Lee Massenburg
Born May 26, 1929 - Died June 14, 1983
Robert Lee "Bob" Massenburg was born in Indiana on 26 May 1929 and was appointed to West Point from the 33rd Congressional District of Pennsylvania.
His West Point classmates recall: "A veteran of a thousand battles with the Academic Department, many of which were too close for comfort, Bob will always find the Army easy. Whether with the Academic Department, or in argument with his classmates, Bob's pugnacious abilities bode ill for the Army's enemies. His carefree nonchalance and colorful language have been a constant source of entertainment for all of us."
During his cadet days Bob was with the Spanish and the Weight Lifting Clubs yearling, cow and first class years and with the Radio Club cow and first class years. He was a Cadet Sergeant first class year.
On graduation Bob went in the Artillery and after completing the Basic Artillery Course at Fort Sill, Oklahoma reported to the Anti-Aircraft Gun Battalion at Fort Meade, Maryland where he served from 1951 to 1952. His next assignment was to the 140th Anti Aircraft Battalion, 40th Division in Korea where he served from 1952 to 1953 and was decorated with the Bronze Star Medal for distinguished heroism against an enemy and the Commendation Ribbon. In 1954 Bob resigned his First Lieutenant's commission and returned to civilian life.
In 1954 he became associated with United States Steel Corporation and in 1962 obtained a Master's degree in Business Administration from the University of Pittsburgh.
Bob died in Lewiston, Pennsylvania on 14 June 1983 where his widow Mrs. Robert L. Massenburg (Ruth) makes her home.
