Richard Carlyle "Mac" McClure was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey on 19 November 1925 and was appointed to West Point from the United States Army. His West Point classmates recall: "To know 'Mac' is to know Ghandi, Whitman, and Joyce. Dick's lifetime search brought him through airborne, radio, and infantry service schools and presently 'the Corps.' His epitome (and he'll tell you, too) is 'good sack, three squares, and a good library.' But that is just the basis of something very fine, very human in 'Mac' that makes his real ambition so grand. 'Mac' will succeed." During his cadet days Mac was with the Radio Club all four years and served as President his last year; went out for Cross Country and Gymnastics plebe year and earned Numerals in the last sport; was with the Russian Club yearling, cow and first class years; and was a Cadet First Sergeant of Company D-2 his first class year. Upon graduation Mac went in the Signal Corps and after attending the Signal Corps Training Center at Fort Gordon, Georgia reported to his first station. In 1971 Mac was assigned to the 6th Army Strike Control Center. In 1975 Mac retired from the United States Army as a Lieutenant Colonel. Mac died on December 12, 1990.
