Ronald Hugh Milam
Born December 23, 1928 - Died April 8, 1974
Ronald Hugh "Ronnie" Milam was born in Tusla, Oklahoma on 23 December 1928 and was appointed to West Point from an Honor Military School.
His West Point classmates recall: "Ronnie realized a long life ambition when he came to West Point. Never hard pressed by academics, Ronnie was able to excel as both an athlete and a leader of men. Many were the weekends that found Ronnie and his O. A. O. in the midst of a social whirl at Cullum Hall. Friendly, ambitious, and diligent, Ronnie will go far in life and will always be a West Pointer in every sense of the word."
During his cadet days Ronnie went out for Football and Track plebe year; was with the Weight Lifting Club plebe, yearling, and cow years; went out for Boxing and was with the Radio and Spanish Clubs plebe and yearling years; went out for Wrestling and was on the Debate Council first class year; and was a Cadet Captain his first class year serving as Company Commander of Company D-2.
Upon graduation Ronnie went in the Infantry and after completing the Basic Infantry Course at Fort Benning, Georgia reported to the 17th Infantry Division in Korea where he served as a Company Commander from 1952 to 1953 and was decorated with the Bronze Star Medal for distinguished heroism against an enemy; the Purple Heart for wounds in action against an enemy; and the Combat Infantryman Badge. In 1961 Ronnie attended the Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and went on to earn a Masters degree in Psychology from Vandervilt University in 1963. From 1963 to 1966 Ronnie served with the Office, Chief of Research & Development when he was appointed Brigade Deputy Commander with the 1st Division, Republic of Vietnam. In 1972 Ronnie retired disabled from the United States Army as a Lieutenant Colonel.
Ronnie died in Denver, Colorado on 8 April 1974.
