John Little Moffat

Born April 29, 1929 - Died June 1, 1994

John Little "Moff" Moffat was born in Hawaii on 29 April 1929 but was appointed to West Point from the 19th Congressional District of Virginia.

His West Point classmates recall: "A chronic sackoid, Moff loves fishing, the outdoors, and is competent in all sports, including dragging. Musically inclined, he tried drums and the sweet potato but abandoned both at his wives' demand, confining his musical activity to the Glee Club. He spent his few waking hours making a hookah and hiding his bizarre pipes from the Tac. Everybody's buddy, it's going to be rough saying good-bye." During his cadet days Moff was an Acolyte and with the Glee Club cow and first class years; was on the Catholic Choir and with the French Club, plebe and yearling years; with the Fishing Club yearling, cow, and first class years, and was a Cadet Supply Sergeant his first class year.

On graduation Moff went in the Corps of Engineers and after completing the Basic Engineers Course at Fort Belvoir, Virginia reported to the 44th Airborne Infantry Battalion in Korea where he served from 1951 to 1952 and was decorated with the Bronze Star Medal for distinguished heroism against an enemy on completion of his tour.

From 1953 to 1954 Moff was assigned to The Engineer Center, Fort Belvoir, Virginia. Then Moff went back to school and earned a Master of Science degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts.

From 1966 to 1967 and again from 1970 to 1971 Moff served with the United States Army Reserve, Vietnam and was decorated with the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services on completion of each assignment. Then Moff was assigned to Headquarters, Department of the Army and was decorated with an additional Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services on completion of his duty tour. Next Moff was appointed Deputy Director, Military Communications Office, Chief of Engineers and served as such until 1971.

Moff's last military assignment was Army & Air Force Exchange Service where he served from 1978 to 1979 when he retired from the United States Army as a Colonel. Moff died in Arlington, Texas on 1 June 1994. Moff's widow Mrs. John L. Moffat (Anita) makes her home in Arlington.
