Leland Carl Pinkel

Born September 4, 1929 - Died June 28, 1964

Leland Carl "Doc" Pinkel was born in Missouri on 4 September 1929 but was appointed to West Point from the 22nd Congressional District of Illinois.

His West Point classmates recall: "'Doc' was one of the Midwest's stalwarts who did not turn Easterner. He was a 'tin school' product, but it really didn't show. We remember most his plebe year vitality that carried over to '51 when he was one of the leaders in M-1. Neither 'goat' nor 'hive,' 'Doc' made the most of his time here and made his niche in runt history. Looking forward, we'll all be glad to run into 'Doc' again."

During his cadet days Doc was Company Hop Manager and with the Camera Club all four years, he was with the Rifle Club plebe year, a Sunday School Teacher plebe and yearling years, on the Policy Committee and with the Radio Club cow and first class years, and was a Cadet Lieutenant his first class year.

On graduation Doc went in the Air Force and after pilot training reported to a Flight Squadron with the Far Eastern Air Force where he served from 1953 to 1955.

Doc resigned his First Lieutenant's commission in 1956.
