John Cooper Powell

Born February 5, 1927 ? Died April 25, 2000


John Cooper Powell was born in Florida on 5 February 1927 and was appointed to West Point from the United States Army.

His West Point classmates recall: "As a lover of the more aesthetic things of life you will find this easygoing gentleman from Mississippi enjoying life in a relaxed manner. Not a leader in the academic field, John won his most notable triumph over the M.T.&G. Department by specking the contour lines on his 1:25,000 West Point Map. John's gifted personality and friendly spirit will insure his success in his future career."

During his cadet days John was on the Debate Council all four years; with the German and Golf Clubs for two years, serving as President of the Golf Club his last year; on the Forum and the Public Information Detail one year, and was a Cadet Sergeant his first class year.

Upon graduation John went in the Air Force and after flying training reported to the 12th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron in Korea where he served until 1953 and was decorated with the Distinguished Flying Cross for distinguished heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight.

In 1958, John was assigned to the Staff & Faculty of the United States Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colorado. John earned a Master of Arts degree from Stanford University.

John Cooper Powell, died at the Pikes Peak Hospice on Tuesday April 25,2000 at 0812 MDT. Memorial service was held at 1100 MDT on Tue. May 2,2000 at the US Air Force Academy Cadet Catholic Chapel. Interment to followed in the USAFA Cemetery. Don McGann and Loren Anderson gave the eulogies at the memorial service. Other classmates attending the service were George Meighen, Lew Casbon, and Ernie Rose. Internment was at the Air Force Academy Cementry.
