Joseph Wyndham Rawlings

Born June 13, 1926 - Died July 15, 1987


Joseph Wyndham "Joe" Rawlings was born in Joelton, Tennessee on 13 June 1927 and was appointed to West Point from the 6th Congressional District.

His West Point classmates recall: "Arriving from the Air Force Joe easily adapted himself to West Point life. An exciting plebe year and his enjoyable sense of humor dubbed him 'The Duke of West Point.' Duke has many friends and his energetic, friendly nature will add many more during his career. Duke, a true Southern Gentleman with an educated drawl, has all the qualities and traits essential to as successful Army career." During his cadet days Joe went out for Swimming and was with the Cadet Chapel Choir all four years serving as Manager of the former his first class year; was with the Model Airplane Club yearling, cow and first class years; with the Spanish Club yearling and cow years; with the Pistol Club cow and first class years; and was a Cadet Sergeant his first class year.

Upon graduation Joe went in the Artillery and after completing the Basic Artillery Course at Fort Sill, Oklahoma reported to the 14th Anti Aircraft Battalion where he served from 1951 to 1952. Joe's next assignment was to the 94th Anti Aircraft Battalion in Europe from 1952 to 1954. In 1954 Joe was appointed Aide-de-Camp to the Commanding General of the 2nd Airborne Artillery. In 1958 Joe was retired disabled as a Captain.

Joe was the owner of the Rawlings Country Club Resort in Joelton, Tennessee at the time of his death on 15 July 1987. Mrs. Joseph W. Rawlings (Tove) makes her home in Joelton, Tennessee. The January 1991 Assembly noted that Tove Rawlings has remarried (an old family friend) and the children are very pleased. The Rawlings Farm Resort has been remodeled and is doing very well with children John, Eva and Jan greatly involved.
