Born March 22, 1926 - Died April 15, 1997
Howard Cameron "Howie" Williams was born in Reno, Nevada on 22 March 1926 to John Bernard and Emma Violet Williams and was appointed to West Point on a Senatorial appointment. His West Point classmates recall: "Howie crashed West Point a product of the University of Nevada and the Army. After bucking 'that darned Frog Dept' for his famed 2.000 averages, he then mastered the academic situation and turned to the more intriguing aspects of cadet life. Never one to refuse the possibilities of an adventurous weekend, Howie was known for living on borrowed time with the TD and his many tales of weekends." During his cadet days Howie was on the Ring Committee all four years, with the Ski Team yearling, cow, and first class years, went out for Baseball and Special Programs plebe year, was with the Model Railroad Club yearling and cow years and was a Cadet Lieutenant his first class year. On graduation Howie went in the Infantry and after completing the Basic Infantry Course at Fort Benning, Georgia reported to the 40th Division in Korea where he served until 1953. In 1954 Howie resigned his commission as a First Lieutenant and went into business for himself. In 1974 he established CamVac, Inc. and was engaged in the manufacturing and distributing of vacuum pumps; a business he maintained until his death on April 15, 1997 at the home of his son, Cameron, in San Diego, California. Howie is survived by his sister Peggy Williams of Reno, and five children: Howard Cameron Jr. of San Diego and George of Monterey; daughters Nanette Sambach of Sparks, Nevada; Suzanne Williams of Salinas and Cynthia DeTar of Post Falls, Idaho; nephews John B. Williams III of Lodi, California and Navy Captain Harold A. Williams of Point Loma, California; nieces Shari W. Aldrich of Reno, Lola Mitchell of Incline, Nevada and Sally Markstein of Auburn; eleven grandchildren; and many friends. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on April 22, 1997 at Carmel Mission with burial at the San Carlos Catholic Cemetery in Monterey, California next to his wife, Mary McElroy Williams, who preceded him in death in August 1995. A memorial service was also held in Reno, Nevada on April 22, 1997 at 5 p.m. at The Church of the Little Flower.
